Built on the site of a medieval church founded by D. Dinis, the Church of São Miguel, Matriz de Freixo de Espada à Cinta, is located in the historical centre of this border town. Its interior is organised according to the hallenkirchen scheme (hall churches), with the roofs of the three naves having a ribbed vault at the same height, a feature revealed at the level of the buttressed front.
Despite the various intervention campaigns it underwent throughout the modern age, it maintained a strong Manueline style, as exemplified by the entrance portal flanked by pilasters and decoration, which helped to soften the structural austerity of the temple. During the reign of D. João V, the gilded main altarpiece in national Baroque style was introduced, with the sixteen painted panels of the original altarpiece, belonging to the Grão Vasco school, being placed on the side walls of the main chapel.
The Space
Space entirely made up of granite and with wooden altars.
There is no humidity and it is well kempt.
The church bell rings every 30 minutes and may not be switched it off except with authorisation from the town hall.
Road with traffic very close by.
Insufficient lighting for concerts but no noticeable noise.
Some elements are fixed (altar) and some are movable (ambo).

The Sound
The recordings were all made using the same methodology, keeping the same distances between performers and using the same recording technique (AB Omni 40cm spacing)
Space with a long but balanced reverb. Although much of the material is granite, the size and layout prevent very strong reflections. Good bass response and good recording results were easy to obtain.

Located in the town centre, it has a wide range of services very close by.
Despite being far from a major urban centre, it has enough quality hotels and services.
