Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Pombeiro

Saint Mary of Pombeiro was one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in the area between the Douro and Minho rivers, and was founded by D. Gomes Echiegues and his wife Gontroda in 1102.

The Church, built between the 12th and 13th centuries, features three naves, divided by diaphragm-arches with painted wooden ceilings on the lateral naves. The original plant of the chancel, rebuilt in the 18th century, was semi-circular, typical of the Romanesque style, as were the still existing apses [secondary chapels]. The main portal capitals are a remarkable example of Romanesque sculpture.

  • Ample space for the control booth.

  • Good and plenty natural light.

  • Possibility of turning off the noisy lights and the church bells.

  • Peaceful surroundings with little noise.

The Sound

The recordings were all made using the same methodology, keeping the same distances between performers and using the same recording technique (AB Omni 40cm spacing)

This is a very rich space from an acoustic point of view, allowing for a variety of possible recording results. In addition to the 3 naves, it has a main chapel of considerable size. It is a space with a long reverberation time, so it is suitable for small, medium and large instrumental ensembles.

Strong points

  • Complexity of reverb.

  • Various possibilities for sound recording with the naturally long pre-delay.

Weak points

  • Danger of contamination by the loudest instrument due to the long reverb time.

  • In certain layouts, the musicians may have difficulty in hearing one another.
