Mosteiro de Santo André de Rendufe

Of uncertain origin, the Monastery of Santo André de Rendufe was founded by Egas Paes de Penegate on a plot of land donated by Count D. Henrique to the friars of the Benedictine Monastery of Abadia. However, according to an inscription on the pavement next to the triumphal arch, the church was completed in 1151. Due to the ruinous management of the commendatory abbots and the quarrels between them, the archbishop and the Vasconcelos family, the monastery was eventually closed in the 15th century and transformed into a collegiate church under the administration of Cardinal Alpedrinha. In fact, the latter's family owned the monastery until the 16th century, when the commander D. Henrique de Sousa reformed and restored the monastic house.

This campaign of works allowed the church to remain in place until the 18th century, without it being integrated into the group of monasteries remodelled after the creation of the Benedictine Congregation in 1567. Throughout the 17th century, several renovations were undertaken with the aim of updating the church, as demonstrated by the façade of the entrance hall, inspired by models published in Serlio's architectural treatise. Although a complete renovation of the complex was undertaken in the 18th century, a large part of it was destroyed by a fire in 1877.

The Space

This space is part of a monastic complex, although part of the building is manifestly neglected. In need of general maintenance, with a lot of dampness. Exposed to noise from agricultural machinery used in the surroundings. Various layouts are possible, although some objects are difficult to remove. It includes other spaces that could be used, such as the high choir and the cloister. The vestry is a large space with two rooms, which is logistically favourable. There is a bathroom which is accessible from the cloister but not from the church building. The main materials are wood and granite, although a large area is plastered.

Note: we learnt that the interior of the building was renovated after our visit. It is possible that changes may have occurred.

Strong points

  • Ample parking.

  • Good access for loading and unloading.

  • Bathroom

  • Vestry with generous space for support or for control room.

Weak points

  • There are steps leading up to the church, but there is also a ramp.

  • Presence of elements that are difficult to move.

The Sound

The recordings were all made using the same methodology, keeping the same distances between performers and using the same recording technique (AB Omni 40cm spacing)

Gráfico Rendufe

Space with interesting reverb, favouring voices in particular. Although reverb is long, it has good reinforcement of reflections that increase the presence of the direct sound of the instruments.

Various possible layouts, although the presence of a fixed railing in the presbytery may cause difficulties.

One side of the transept has a different architectural configuration with a chapel with a different sonority, which can be used artistically.

From the recordings you can see that it's a space that allows good results with a long reverb but with a good presence of transients.

Strong points

  • Great reverb that proved to be very good for the voices.

  • Possibility of various layouts, despite the railing dividing the presbytery from the nave.

  • Versatile space for recording.

Weak points

  • Asymmetrical architectural volumes.

  • Insufficient insulation for some types of noises.

  • Relatively close to a road, although the surroundings are quiet.
