Exterior
At the end of the 11th century, the Monastery of São Martinho de Tibães was founded, following Benedictine observance, in which the monks followed the rules – silence, obedience, poverty, prayer and work – prescribed by Saint Benedict of Nursia.
The Monastery consists of the church, convent and an outdoor area – the enclosure. The building that stands today was build during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. With a functional architecture, it presents a clear separation between the areas for prayer, work, leisure, communication with the outside, areas occupied by the resident community and others reserved for use as the Congregation’s mother house.

The Sound
The recordings were all made using the same methodology, keeping the same distances between performers and using the same recording technique (AB Omni 40cm spacing)
A grand and beautiful sounding space. Good response across the spectrum and a long reverb that blends musical elements very well.
Various spaces available for setting up control room and for storage.
Limited by the presence of fixed elements (railings) in the nave and presbytery, as well as by noise. A fan in the fire detection system – which cannot be switched off – produces a continuous note which is very conspicuously audible.
Poor acoustic insulation with several broken windows, making outside sounds and noises easily audible inside.
Strong points
-
Space with a grandiose acoustic.
-
Various layout possibilities albeit limited by railings in the nave and presbytery.
Weak points
-
Poor acoustic insulation.
-
Continuous noise of very conspicuous and perceptible pitch, impossible to turn off.
